Applied science is known by many names:

  • exploratory science
  • innovative initiatives
  • data intelligence (In Tyco we use this to distinguish it from Business Intelligence)
  • and many more

This is the practice of developing novel solutions for business practices and products. It may result in improvements to existing businesses or creation of an entirely new business.

In contrast with AR&D, applied science finds novel uses for existing technologies instead of developing technologies themselves. An applied science project tends to have a single or small number of applications, where an AR&D project tends to have many potential applications.

Applied science may result in new business processes, which can become ongoing business intelligence projects once they are established.
